Mount St. Joseph gets series win at Defiance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

LOCATION: Defiance, OH (Craig A Rutter Field)

THE BASICS:

The Mount traveled to Defiance, Ohio to take on the YellowJackets, and were able to take 2 of 3. Winning the series ensured at least a .500 finish on the season for the Lions.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

The first game of the rain soaked series was all about pitching. The Lions sent Alex Wagner and his 1.93 ERA to the mound for friday's game, and the Freshman did not disappoint. Wagner pitched 6.0 innings of 5 hit, shutout baseball for  the Lions while striking out 6. Nick Gunnell came on in releif to start the 7th innings, and threw 3.0 innings of one hit baseball to complete the shutout.

Offensively the Lions were able to score 7 runs in support of the fantastic pitching. They were led by a trio of batters, Zak Farmer, Nick Browning and Matt Hofmann each collected a pair of hits, and were responsible for 5 of the 7 Lions runs.

Wagner's pitching and the timely hitting helped the Lions get off to a good start in the series with a 7-0 victory.

Game 2

In the second game of the series on Saturday, the Lions sent Wyatt Myers to the hill, and through the front 7 innings he was dominant. When he trotted out to the mound for his 8th inning of work, he would surrender a run and leave the bases loaded without collecting an out.

Farmer came in to relieve Myers and immediately gave up a 2 RBI double. In total Defiance scored 4 times in the 8th to tie the game, and then won the game in walk off fashion with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Again the Lions were paced offensively by Hofmann, who was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI for the second consecutive game. Simon Schaefer went 2 for 4 in the leadoff spot for the Lions, being the catalyst at the top of the lineup.

The YellowJackets came back to break the Lions heart 5-4 in the walk-off win.

Game 3

In the rubber match the Lions would get their 3rd very solid start in a row, this time it was Paul Spaulding's turn. Spaulding would go 6.1 innings of 4 hit, 2 run baseball while striking out 7 in the win. Hofmann would relieve him in the 7th and final inning and get two outs for the save.

Nate Hunter led the way offensively in game 3 for the Lions going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Zak Wagner also had a solid day at the plate going 1 for 2 with an RBI and a sac fly.

The final score would be 4-2 in 7 innings as the game was shortened due to rain.
