Lions mount second half comeback

Box Score

Mount St. Joseph started slow against Carroll University on Wednesday afternoon.  The Lions and the Pioneers were locked in what appeared to be a defensive battle in the first quarter, each scoring just once.

When the second quarter started Mount St. Joseph took control on offense.  The Lions erupted for four goals in the second period of play, allowing only two on defense.  Connor McPhail (Nashville, TN / Father Ryan), who scored the first goal of the game for the Lions in the first quarter, scored his second goal of the game in the second quarter.  He was one of four different Lions to score in the period and going into halftime the Lions led the Pioneers 5-3.

The third quarter proved costly for Mount St. Joseph.  In the span of six minutes the Lions would give up five goals to the Pioneers.  Mount St. Joseph would see their 5-3 lead disappear and quickly found themselves on the wrong end of a 8-5 game.

After an intense timeout by head coach Colin Smith, the Lions emerged from the huddle with new life.  Mount St. Joseph would score the last two goals of the third quarter and pull within one heading to the fourth quarter.

After an incredible turn of events for the Lions they would recover from their third quarter struggles and actually regain the lead.  Tyler Lindholtz (Springboro, OH / Springboro) and Connor McPhail would each score their third goals of the game, respectively, to tie the game and then retake the lead.  However, Carroll was not finished.  The Pioneers tied the game back up with about seven minutes to play and would take the lead on the Lions with a minute and a half remaining.  This is a lead the Lions could not come back from and they ended up falling to the Pioneers 10-9.

LIONS AT THE PEAK:

Connor McPhail, Tyler Lindholtz, and Jesse Purdy did the vast majority of the damage for the Lions on Wednesday.  McPhail and Lindholtz were both able to find the back of the net three times during the game.  Purdy seemed to find every open man who was in position to score for Mount St. Joseph and ended the game with four assists.

UP NEXT:

The Lions will travel to West Virginia to play Bethany on Saturday.  The opening faceoff is set for 1:00 PM.
