Mount St. Joseph travels to Transylvania for HCAC battle

Box Score

Mount St. Joseph won their first conference series of the season over Manchester 2-1 last weekend and would look to continue their hot conference start at Transylvania.

The Lions would send sophomore starting pitcher Nick Gunnell (Hamilton, OH / Fairfield) to the hill to face the Pioneers.  He would be fresh off of a great start in a win against Otterbein and would look to stay hot.  Unfortunately, Gunnell would not have his best stuff on Tuesday night.  He would work 5 innings for the Lions, yielding 7 hits and 6 runs to the Pioneers.

The Lion offense did not have a great day at the plate either.  Once the Pioneers put up three runs in the first inning, the Lions were trying to play catch-up for the rest of the game.  The closest Mount St. Joseph ever came to getting back into the game was when the score was 6-4 after their half of the sixth inning.

However, Transylvania would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, effectively putting the game out of reach.  No more runs would be scored by either team for the remainder of the game and the Pioneers would top the Lions by a score of 9-4.

LIONS AT THE PEAK:

Zak Farmer (Hamilton, OH / Lakota West) and Jake Daulton (Monroe, OH / Monroe) were the two highlights in the Mount St. Joseph lineup on Tuesday night.  Farmer was 2-3 on the day, knocking two doubles off of Pioneer pitching and also scoring a run.  Daulton got his first collegiate start on Tuesday and made the most of his opportunity.  He would end up going 2-4 with a double and two RBIs in his first start.

UP NEXT:

The Lions have a weekend slate of games at Anderson this coming weekend.  They will kick the series off on Friday afternoon at 4:15 PM and follow the Friday showdown with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  Game one of the doubleheader will come at 12:00 PM with the second game starting directly after the conclusion of the first game.
