Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Saturday was a tough day for the Lions. Wilmington traveled to UC Health Stadium in Florence, Kentucky to face off in a double-header verses Mount St. Joseph in a series that has been historically dominated by the Lions.
Saturday would go against the recent history of the series. After some early morning snow would fade away the Lions took the field. The Lions threatened to score in the first inning, having two men on with only one man out. However, Wilmington was able to dance out of trouble and escape the inning unscathed and then put up a run of their own in the top of the second inning.
The Lions were able to produce a threat to score several more times thoughout the game but were never able to come up with the big hit to bust things open. After Wilmington was able to push a few more runners across the plate later in the game, the Quakers were able to steal game one by a score of 4-0.
The Lions would have a chance to redeem themselves in the second game of the double header, sending Sophomore Austin Richey (Cincinnati, OH / CCD) to the hill in attempt to earn a split with the Quakers. Richey would throw the ball extremely well in what would end up being his best career start to date for Mount St. Joseph. He would end up going six strong innings, allowing six hits and only one run.
The Lions got the start they needed to earn a split with the Quakers but were unable to get anything rolling on offense. In the third inning the Quakers pushed their only run of the game across the plate, making the score 1-0. Over the course of the last six innings the Lions would have runners in scoring position multiple times but some great defensive plays and timely pitching for the Quakers helped them work out of trouble time after time. Wilmington would go on to take the game 1-0 and sweep Mount St. Joseph in their double-header.
Up next for the Lions is their spring break trip to Florida. Mount St. Joseph will play seven games in seven days in Florida with the first two of these games being a double-header against Daniel Webster on Sunday, March 12 at Pat Thomas Stadium beginning at 3:30 PM.
