The Basics:
The Lions faced Georgetown College in an emotional contest Thursday 9/28. Both teams played an aggressive game as there was multiple cards and penalties. The score was tied at the end of the first half 1-1. In the second half each team was able to add a goal to their total to tie it up at 2-2 and force overtime. Neither team was able to score in the extra period, which resulted in a tie with a final of 2-2.
How it Happened:
The Lions started the game off trying to set the pace. Mount St. Joseph was able to strike first after an assist by Andrew Phelps (Alexandria, KY Campbell County) lead to a goal by Brycen Evans (Moores Hills, IN/ Lawrenceburg). This gave the Lions the lead 1-0. About 5 minutes later Georgetown was able to get a goal of their own to tie the score at 1-1. This would be the score going into halftime. The second half was full of penalties as multiple players were ejected from the game. Alex Gross (Cincinnati, OH/ Oak Hills) was able to score after an amazing bicycle kick sent the ball straight into the net. This gave the Lions the lead 2-1 at the beginning of the second half, but Alex was ejected from the game after receiving his second yellow card. This forced the Lions to defend with a man down. Georgetown was able to take advantage and tie the score again with a goal of their own in the 56th minute. This tied the score at 2-2. Neither team was able to get a last second goal, so the match was forced into overtime. In extra time both teams struggled to get to the goal with only 11 total shots from both teams combined. Neither team was able to score after the second overtime period which resulted in a tie 2-2.
Standouts:
Alex Gross was able to show his athletic ability with an extraordinary bicycle kick goal to put the Lions in the lead in the second half.
