Lions dominate at the HCAC Duals

DEFIANCE, Ohio - This weekend the Lions traveled to Defiance, Ohio to take on our conference foes, Defiance College and Manchester University. The Lions finished the day 2-0 including a 35-16 win over Manchester and a 34-9 win over Defiance. 

Mount St. Joseph vs Manchester

Freshman Tariq Hornbuckle (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista) got things started for the Mount with a pin in the 3rd period to give them a 6-0 lead. After a forfeit by Manchester at the 133lb weight class the Lions take a 12-0 lead. Next up for the Lions was Nate McClanahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and he dominated. After only 23 seconds McClanahan found himself with a victory after a pin. This put the Lions up big with a 18-0 win. 

After a couple of tough matches the match score showed 18-10 with the Lions holding the lead. Cornell Beachem Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) got things rolling again for the Lions. Beachem Jr. much like McClanahan got a quick pin. Only 44 seconds into the match Beachem Jr. found himself victorious via the pin, stretching the Lions lead to 24-10. Following Beachem Jr. was Sophomore Antonio McCloud (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder). McCloud came out of the gates firing. He jumped out to an early lead and didn't look back. McCloud secured his win with a technical fall in the 2nd period with a final score of 16-1 pushing the Mount's lead to 29-10. 

In the 197lb weight class sophomore Cameron Sauerwein (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) secured a victory. Sauerwein dominated early and followed it up with a pin in the 2nd period giving the Lions a strong 35-10 lead. After the heavyweight match the Lions came out victorious with a final score of 35-16. 

Mount St. Joseph vs Defiance

Again starting things off for the Lions was Tariq Hornbuckle. After a tough match Hornbuckle secured the victory with a 10-5 win giving the Mount a 3-0 lead. Next up for the Lions was freshman Jabari Thomas (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield). Thomas battled hard in his match and came out victorious with a 6-3 win giving the Lions a 6-0 dual score lead. Nate McClanahan was up next in the 141lb weight class. The Lions found themselves in another highly contested match and the Lions would again come out victorious. After a long match McClanahan secured the 9-8 victory giving the Lions a 9-0 lead.

Chase Haehnle (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) continued the Mount's success in the dual. Haehnle was able to pin his opponent in the first period giving the Mount a 15-0. Charles Lipps was up next in the 157lb weight class and was able to secure his first victory on the day with a 9-4 win. With that win the Lion's lead extended to 18-0. After the Lions dropped a match it was Cornell Beachem Jr.'s turn in the 174lb weight class. Beachem Jr. owned the match early and pinned his opponent in the second period to stretch the Mount's lead to 24-6. 

McCloud was next up at the 184lb weight class. McCloud didn't allow his opponent to score a point on him and secured his technical fall victory in the second period with a final score of 16-0. In the 197lb weight class Cameron Sauerwein captured his second win on the day. Sauerwein dominated from the start and got a technical fall victory in the third period with a final score of 25-9. After the heavyweight match the Lions finalized their victory with a final score of 34-9.
