Box Score Delhi, Ohio – Back in the Harrington Center on Saturday the Lions welcomed the Fightin' Engineers of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game. Entering the contest, the Lions were 2-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference for the season, while the Fightin' Engineers came in with a 1-11 overall record and a 0-5 conference record.
The Lions entered the game looking to record a win after having a tough winter break schedule. Entering the second part of the season for the 2019-2020 schedule the Lions look to turn their luck around. During halftime of the game the Lions celebrated 50 years of Mount St. Joseph women's basketball.
Nearly 50 women spanning every decade of MSJ women's basketball were on hand. During the halftime celebration each of them was recognized on the court for their contributions to the MSJ women's basketball program. Two legends of the MSJ athletics department were on hand, Jean Dowell and Pat Schibinski who both took the time to address the crowd.
Out of the gate both teams struggled to create any offensive opportunity. It was a low scoring first quarter as neither team was able to make a basket for the first five minutes of play. Chloe Jansen (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) got the Lions on the board first with a three at 5:05 left in the quarter. It wouldn't be until the 3:56 mark when the Lions would extend their lead to 6-0 with another basket by Chloe Jansen. The Fightin' Engineers would answer and get themselves on the board at 3:55 as the Lions led them 6-2. MacKenzie Marcum (Mason, Ohio/Kings) would hit a three and give the Lions a 9-4 lead with 1:32 left in the quarter. With the first quarter ticking down the Lions and the Fightin' Engineers both struggled to create any more opportunities and would end the first quarter with the Lions leading 9-4.
More baskets were made in the second quarter from both teams to build the score up. A jump shot by the Fightin' Engineers was followed by a three from Chloe Jansen. At 8:31 the Lions led 12-6. The Fightin' Engineers would go on a run to tie the game up at 12-12 as they recorded six points of the course of 2 minutes. Chloe Jansen would take the lead back for the Lions with another three with 5:21 left in the second quarter. The Fightin' Engineers made a layup at the 4:34 mark for their last points of the quarter to bring the game within one as the scoreboard read 15-14 in favor of the Lions. The Lions would build up their score over the remainder of the quarter. Mackenzie Marcum, Chloe Jansen, and Maddie Haberthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) would all hit a three during this time. Entering halftime, the Lions led the Fightin' Engineers 27-14.
The Lions sat in a good spot coming out of halftime with a 13-point lead. A free throw and a jump shot by the Fightin' Engineers would start the quarter. Chloe Jansen would continue to hits threes for the day with one at the 7:06 mark. Over the next three minutes neither team would create much offensive action, the Lions held onto a 30-17 point lead. Two pairs of free throws and a layup by the Lions helped round up the third quarter. At the end of the third the Lions led the Fightin' Engineers 36-17.
In the final quarter Maddie Haberthy would get it started with a three to give the Lions a 39-17 lead. A layup by Aliyah Huff (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) would get the Lions over 40 points for the day. The Fightin' Engineers would make their first points of the fourth quarter with a free throw at the 7:11 mark before making a three. The Lions led the Fightin' Engineers 41-21. It would be a low scoring quarter as for the remainder of the game the Lions only recorded six more points while the Fightin' Engineers recorded 11. At the final buzzer the scoreboard read 47-29 in favor of the Lions. The Lion recorded just their third win of the season and their second conference win.
Chloe Jansen led the Lions for the day with 19 points against the Fightin' Engineers. Jansen was 6-7 in three throws made, recorded eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Maddie Haberthy was also involved on the Lions offense with 13 points for the day as well as one rebound, one assist, and six steals.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Franklin, Indiana to take on Franklin College in a HCAC contest. The game is set to tip-off at 7:30 PM. Continue to check out MSJSports.com for more updates on the rest of the Lions 2019-2020 season.
