CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph University wrestling team welcomed the Student Princes of Heidelberg University to the Harrington Center. The Lions dominated late in the dual, securing them a 28-21 victory.
The Lions started off slow by dropping the first two matches as they found themselves down 12-0. But it wasn't long before the Lions got a mark on the scoreboard. Nate McClanahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) got things started for the Lions with a victory. McClanahan earned the Lions 6 points with a pin in the 3rd period. After the Lions dropped another close match the score read 15-6 in favor of Heidelberg.
The trailed by 9 but this fueled the Lions flame. Starting off with sophomore Charles Lipps (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder). Lipps never let his opponent into the match as he dominated with a 10-0 victory. Following Lipps was freshman Austin Belcher (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder). Belcher continued the success for the Lions with a 8-3 victory trimming the dual score to 13-15.
Following Belcher is the #1 DIII wrestler in the nation at 174lbs sophomore Cornell Beachem Jr. (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods). Cornell was absolutely dominant in his match, making it look easy. Cornell came out with a 22-5 technical fall victory giving the Lions a 18-15 lead.
After Beachem Jr. was sophomore Antonio McCloud (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder). McCloud in the 184lb weight class made his match look like practice. McCloud pinned his opponent with ease only 1:21 seconds into the match. Following Antonio was sophomore Cameron Sauerwein (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison). Sauerwein ,much like his teammates, took control of his match early. He defeated his opponent 13-3 giving the Lions a 28-15 lead going into the final match.
The Lions dropped the final match of the dual in a tight contest. The final score read 28-21 in favor of the Lions. With this victory it moves the Lions dual record to 12-5 on the year.
