Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio - Your Mount St. Joseph Lions played host to the Eagles of Edgewood College this Monday which ended as an instant classic. For Edgewood this was their debut game as a program which ended with a 2OT defeat by your Mount St. Joseph Lions. The Lions tallied 10 goals on 46 shots as they came out victorious 10-9.
The game started off quickly for the Lions with a
Cole Mericle goal just 12 seconds into the game. After a pair of shots from both squads the Lions would find the net again, this time it was Freshman
Bryce Smith with 11 minutes left in the first quarter. Following The Mount's second goal Edgewood would score two of their own tying the score at 2-2 going into the second quarter.
Edgewood started the second quarter with a pair of shots and eventually a man-up goal with 13 minutes remaining in the half. But the Lions would answer right back with a goal of their own by
Bryce Smith tying the score back up, this time 3-3. The squads then both traded multiple shots before the Lions would add two goals, one by
Bryce Smith completing his hat-trick and one from
Kevin Smith. Going into halftime the Lions lead by a score of 5-3.
To start the third quarter
Bryce Smith continued to put the ball into the net, scoring his forth goal of the night with 12:27 remaining in the third quarter. But, the Lions would struggle for the rest of the quarter unable to get another goal. The Eagles would score three more times in the quarter which evened the score at 6 going into the final quarter.
To start the fourth the Eagles carried their momentum from the third scoring three goals. With 4:33 remaining in the quarter Freshman
Austin Combs was able to score for the Lions trimming the Eagles lead to just 9-7. Just two minutes later Combs added another goal making it a 1 goal game with 2:16 remaining. With just 13 seconds remaining on a pass from
Austin Combs Sophomore
Cole Mericle was able to find the net sending the game into overtime!
To start the first overtime period goalkeeper
TJ Ahrens made a great save to keep the game going for the Lions. With 2 minutes remaining the Eagles found themselves down 2 players on the field due to penalties but the Lions were unable to take advantage sending the game into 2OT.
After a pair of shots from the Lions to start double overtime
TJ Ahrens made another great save to give the Lions another chance on the attack. with 53 seconds remaining the Lions cleared the ball and moved into Eagles territory. The Lions set up their attack and the ball landed into the stick of
Cole Mericle who snuck the ball into the net to complete his hat trick and win the game for the Lions!
Bryce Smith led the Lions with 4 goals on the night.
Cole Mericle also added 3 goals on the night paired with 2 assists. Finally,
Austin Combs was a staple for the Lions defense who also added 2 goals and 2 assists.
UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph Lions will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the Redhawks of La Roche University on Saturday, March 20th. The game is set to start at 5PM.
