Lions Start Season off at the Mount Union Invitational

ALLIANCE, Ohio - On Saturday, November 5th your Mount St. Joseph University wrestling team traveled to Mount Union to compete at the Mount Union Invitational. The Invitational included 9 total teams with the Lions earning 5 individual placers. Skyler Cowgill and Donavan Page each earned 8th place at 174 and 285. Also, Kaleb Gelter was impressive finishing 5th in the 197 class. Alex Hobbs was impressive in his Lion debut finishing 3rd in the 174 class. Desmond Diggs was the highest placer for the Lions finishing as the runner-up in the 141 weight class.

First, Desmond Diggs got the meet started with a few impressive matches. Diggs ended his first match early with a pin round 2 followed by a gritty 13-7 decision victory placing him in the Quarterfinal match. Diggs again endured a gritty match coming out on top 13-8 advancing to the Semifinal. In the semifinal Diggs battled out a 3-2 victory setting him up to face the #2 ranked 141lb wrestler in DIII, Jacob Reed from Ohio Northern. In the championship match, Diggs fell just short but finished the day 4-1 while taking home 2nd place. 

In the 174 weight class the Lions had a pair of wrestler's individually place. After dropping his first match, Skyler Cowgill earned a 7-0 victory before dropping his final two matches. Cowgill finished 1-3 on the day but that was good enough for 8th place.

Also, Alex Hobbs looked impressive in his Mount debut. Hobbs took care of business quickly in his opening match with a pin just 56 seconds into the match. After dropping his next match Hobbs would get the opportunity to wrestle back. Hobbs took full advantage pinning his next two opponents in under a minute each setting him up to wrestle in the consolation semifinals. Hobbs continued to ride the hot hand winning 8-4 as he moved on to the 3rd place match. In a highly contested battle Hobbs scored a reversal in the closing seconds to earn his 4th victory of the day earning 3rd place in the 174 weight class.

Finally, Kaleb Gelter was solid in his first action of the season. Gelter dropped his first match but fought back with a major decision 10-2 victory. In the consolation semifinal match Gelter would fall but still be in line to wrestle for 5th place. In the 5th place match, Gelter was impressive fighting for a 7-4 victory taking home 5th place in the 197 weight class.

UP NEXT: Your Mount St. Joseph University wrestling team is back in action on Saturday, November 19th when the Lions travel to Berea, Ohio to compete at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational.
