NEW CONCORD, Ohio - On Saturday, December 10th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions traveled to Muskingum University to compete at their Tri-Meet. The Lions were set to face off against the host, Muskingum and Waynesburg. The Lions kicked off their night with a smooth victory over Waynesburg. A pair of pins late lifted the Lions past the Yellow Jackets 35-18. In the Lions second dual of the night, the scoreline would be much closer. After every weight had wrestled versus Muskingum, the score was tied at 24. To break the tie, the officials turned to pins. The Lions earned three pins in the final dual compared to Muskingum's one giving the Lions an edge and an extra point. With that extra point the Lions took home their second dual win of the season to move to 2-0 in duals.
MOUNT - 35 Â Â Â WAYNESBURG - 18
In the Lions first dual of the weekend they faced off against the Yellow Jackets of Waynesburg. The Lions and Yellow Jackets each forfeited a match early to bring the scoreline to 6-6 after a pair of matches. In the 141lb weight class
Jake Cotsonas would get the Lions rolling. Cotsonas wasted no time jumping out to a lead and never looking back. Cotsonas wrestled his way to a major decision victory, winning 11-3.Â
After the Lions dropped a match
Brody Gray would get The Mount back on track. In the 157lb weight class Gray took care of business with a 8-2 win, giving the Lions a 13-12 lead in points. Up next for the Lions was Skylar Cowgill in the 165lb class. Cowgill built upon Gray's victory with a 13-2 major decision victory extending the Lions lead to 17-12. The Mount would drop the next match but after a forfeit from Waynesburg, the Lions looked to claim victory.Â
Kaleb Gelter then stepped to the mat for the Lions in the 197lb class. Gelter came up huge for the Lions pinning his opponent to give the Lions a 29-18 lead heading into the final match of the dual. Wrestling for the Lions in the 285lb class was
Gary Powell. Powell wasted no time on the mat pinning his opponent in just 30 seconds to give the Lions the victory. With this win the Lions earned their first dual win of the season.
MOUNT - 25 Â Â Â MUSKINGUM - 24
The Lions second dual of the night was a harder test. Muskingum stormed out of the gates earning victories in the first 3 weight classes as they took an early 18-6 lead. But, the Lions weren't done yet. Skylar Cowgill provided the energy the Lions needed earning a first period pin to trim the Muskingum lead to 18-12. In the 174lb class
Alex Hobbs stepped to the mat for The Mount. Building off of Cowgill's momentum, Hobbs would earn a dominant victory pinning his opponent just 1 minute into the match tying the score up at 18.
The Lions would then drop the next two matches by decision setting up a huge 285lb match to decide who wins the dual.
Gary Powell did not back down from the pressure and silenced the Muskingum crowd with a pin just 44 seconds into the match. With the victory the score now read as a 24-24 tie. But, as a tiebreaker, the team with the most pins earns an extra point. With Cowgill, Hobbs and Powell all winning their matches via pinfall, the Lions took the extra point and finished the day 2-0.
