DELAWARE, Ohio - On Thursday, January 12th your Mount St. Joseph University wrestling team traveled to Ohio Wesleyan to take on the Battling Bishops in a Dual Meet. The Lions earned 4 wins on the day including 3 by pin but fell just short to Ohio Wesleyan 26-21.
Desmond Diggs got things started for the Lions in the 133lb weight class. Diggs attacked early and often eventually worked his opponent to his back. Quickly, Diggs dominated the pace of the match pinning his opponent just 55 seconds into the 2nd period giving the Lions an early 6-5 advantage.
But, Ohio Wesleyan would claim the next two matches before
Brody Gray stepped to the mat for the Lions. Gray battled Tim Alexander from Ohio Wesleyan in the 157lb weight class. With the Lions trailing 14-6, The Mount needed a win to trim the deficit. Gray went to battle for the Lions and finished with a tough 5-3 decision victory trimming the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 14-9.
But, the Battling Bishops would respond nicely winning their next match and receiving a medical forfeit in the following match to gain a 23-9 lead.
Stepping to the mat next for The Mount was
Cornell Beachem Jr. in the 184lb weight class. Beachem Jr. enters the match still undefeated in NCAA DIII and looking to get the Lions back on track. Beachem Jr. did just that making quick work of his opponent. Beachem Jr. was dominant winning by pin just 10 seconds into the 2nd period.
Ohio Wesleyan would win the next bout by a slim 6-4 margin bringing the heavyweights to the mat. For The Mount it was
Gary Powell taking on Ohio Wesleyan's Joe Shoup. Powell was impressive in the last match of the night for the Lions. Powell got to a dominant position on the mat and worked to a pin with 20 seconds remaining in the 2nd period.
But, this wasn't enough as the Lions fell to the Battling Bishops 26-21.
