CINCINNATI, Ohio - On Thursday, January 5th your Mount St. Joseph University Lions wrestling team welcomed the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern to the Harrington Center. Defending National Champion and All-American
Cornell Beachem Jr. made his return to the mat to start his season. But, the Lions fell short by a score of 35-13.
The Lions dropped their opening match but responded nicely in the 133lb match.
Desmond Diggs took the mat for the Lions hoping to cut into the Polar Bears lead. Diggs got ahead early with a takedown in the first period followed by a pair of takedowns in the second. Diggs built on his lead nearly earning a pin in the second period cruising to a 14-3 major decision victory.
Defending National Champion and DIII All-American
Cornell Beachem Jr. made his return to the mat in the 184lb class for the first time this season, Thursday night. Beahem Jr. got ahead early with a takedown and never looked back. Beachem Jr. controlled the match and earned a 7-3 decision win to kick off his 2023 campaign.
Gary Powell also continued an impressive year so far with a dominating victory. Powell got to work after securing his first takedown allowing no resistance pinning his opponent in the first period. With that victory Powell improves his record to an impressive 5-1 on the season including 4 wins via pin.
But, the Lions fell short to the Polar Bears by a score of 35-13.
