4 Lions Place in the Top 7 at Mid-States Invitational

OLIVET, Mich. - On Saturday, February 11th your Mount St. Joseph University wrestling team traveled to Olivet College to compete at the Mid-States Invitational. The Mount along with 8 different schools competed at the Invitational. The Lions had a solid day on the mat with 4 wrestlers placing in the top 7.

Brody Gray was the first Lion to crack the top 7. Gray worked quickly in the his first match pinning his opponent just 1 minute and 15 seconds into the bout. Gray would drop his next match but would move to the consolation bracket in the 157lb weight class. Gray got his chance to wrestle back and took advantage. Gray dominated the mat and the match moving on with a 6-1 decision victory. Gray dropped his next match but still earned a spot in the 7th Place match. Gray was given the win due to a medical forfeit earning 7th Place for The Mount in the 157lb weight class.

Skyler Cowgill was the next Lion to make the top 7. In his first match of the day, Cowgill dominated winning 6-0. He would drop his next match but, moves over to the consolation bracket. In his first consolation match, Cowgill wasted no time pinning his opponent in just 1 minute and 9 seconds. Cowgill would then receive a forfeit and an opportunity to wrestle in the 3rd Place match. Cowgill battled in his final match of the day but fell just short earning a 4th Place finish in the 165lb weight class.

Noah Johnson also found success on the mat for the Lions. In the 174lb weight class Johnson first received a bye and followed that up with a gritty 6-4 decision victory. Johnson would drop his next match but would move over to the consolation bracket. In his first consolation match, Johnson was impressive for The Mount. Johnson controlled the pace of the match grinding out a tough 9-4 decision win. In his final match of the day, Johnson also battled in the 3rd Place Match. Johnson fell just short but earned a 4th Place Finish for The Mount.

The final Lion to crack the top 7 was 197lb Kaleb Gelter. Gelter received a bye but after dropping his first match, Gelter needed to wrestle back in the consolation bracket. In his first consolation match, Gelter was impressive dominating the scoring. Gelter won his first match of the day by a major decision 12-2 victory. In his next match Gelter looked stronger, controlling the match and earning a pin with just 3 seconds left to wrestle. Gelter continued to improve as the day went on earning his 2nd pin, this time just 2 minutes into the bout. Gelter now was the 3rd Lion to reach the 3rd Place match and proved he belonged there. Gelter cruised to a 16-1 technical fall victory earning a 3rd Place finish for The Mount in the 197lb weight class.
