OTTAWA, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph women's golf team headed north over the weekend to take part in the 2023 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The event was hosted by Defiance College at the Moose Landing Country Club.
Coach Gilmore and his team of
Alyssa Haverstraw,
Patricia Windholtz,
Amy Smith,
Taylor Anderson and
Emma Winland hit the road this weekend with their eye on competing for an HCAC title.
The Lions were in contention for the entire tournament. In round one it was senior
Patricia Windholtz who paced the team. She fired in an opening round 80 in absolutely horrible conditions for the game of golf. As a team they shot a 340 in the round, tying for the second lowest team score in the round. Joining Windholtz in the 80s on day one was Haverstraw (83) and Smith (85).
In round two on Saturday the conditions began to improve and so did the game of Haverstraw. The sophomore was unbeleivable in the second 18 of the weekend. She fired in a tournament and career low round of 73, to take the individual 36-hole lead into Sunday. Once again Windholtz (83) and Smith (88) fired in rounds in the 80s, this time Anderson joined them with an (89). As a team they shot a 333 in round two, shaving 7 strokes off of their round one score. But Rose-Hulman and Transy began pulling away from the pack a bit.
On Sunday the Lions once again had four players shoot in the 80s. Windholtz once again had the low score of 81, Haverstraw (82), Smith (84) and Winland (89).
Haverstraw finished in 2nd place as an individual for the Lions, Windholtz finished 7th, Smith in a tie for 12th, Anderson in a tie for 24th and Winland 29th.
When asked about his teams performance Coach Gilmore said, "Could not be prouder of these young women. It was pretty special to have the individual leader of the tournament come from our team at the end of each of the first two rounds. This is the best individual performance in the HCAC Championship in program history, and the lowest team score in the HCAC Championship. To say I am proud is an understatement."
