Lions Compete at the Claude Sharer Duals

CLEVELAND, Ohio – On Saturday, January 13th your Mount St. Joseph University wrestling team traveled to Case Western Reserve University to compete at the Claude Sharer Duals. The Lions wrestled three duals on Saturday facing off against, Otterbein University, Case Western Reserve University and Washington and Jefferson College.

MOUNT – 14      OTTERBEIN – 31
In the Lions first dual of the weekend, they faced off against the Cardinals of Otterbein. The Lions started off well grabbing a forfeit win in the 125lb weight class. Following the forfeit, Desmond Diggs took the mat in the 133lb weight class. Diggs was impressive dominating the match en route to a 17-3 major decision victory.

But, the Lions wouldn't take another match until Kaleb Gelter took the mat in the 197lb weight class. Much like Diggs, Gelter made few mistakes winning his match by major decision 14-3. The Lions took a trio of matches but could not make up the deficit falling 14-31.

However, the Lions looked impressive during the extra matches following the dual. Senior Dylan Deck got his first two victories of the campaign with a pair of pins. Also, Freshman Jahlil Davis earned his first collegiate victory with a 4-0 decision win.

MOUNT – 9        CWRU – 35
In the second dual of the afternoon, the Lions faced off against the Spartans of Case Western Reserve. The Spartans took the first match but the Lions responded nicely in the 133lb weight class. Diggs took the mat again for the Lions and again impressed. Diggs looked dominant winning by major decision, 19-7.

The Lions next match win would come in the 285lb weight class. Rowan Tolbert took the mat for the Lions and ended the dual with a dominant performance. Tolbert only needed two minutes to get the victory pinning his opponent with 54 seconds left in the first period. But, the Lions would ultimately fall in the dual 9-35.

MOUNT – 26      WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON – 26 (W&J Pins 4-3)
In the Lions final dual of the day they faced off against the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson. Jordan Miller got the dual started off well for the Lions. Miller made quick work in the 125lb weight class getting a pin in the first period. Diggs continued his dominant day on the mat in the 133lb class. Diggs wasted no time getting a pin in just 21 seconds to give the Lions a 12-0 lead.

But, the Presidents answered taking the next three matches to take a 18-12 lead. Next for the Lions was Deck in the 165lb weight class. Deck looked dominant in his fourth match of the day winning by technical fall 19-4 and trimming the Presidents' lead to just one. Jermaine Poynter was next to the mat for the Lions in the 174lb weight class. Poynter worked his way to an impressive finish getting the pin in the second period to give the Lions a 23-18 lead. Following the match, the Presidents' were penalized for an unsportsmanlike conduct removing a team point, making the score now 23-17.

But, the Presidents would grab the next two matches to take a 26-23 lead with just the 285lb weight class left to wrestle. The Lions sent Tolbert to the mat hoping he can lift them to victory. Tolbert battled as the Lions final chance to take the lead winning his match by decision 8-2. This tied the dual score at 26, forcing a tiebreaker. Washington and Jefferson won the first tiebreaker via total pins 4-3 to take down the Lions.
