The Mount Battles at Wabash College Invite

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – On Saturday, January 20th your Mount St. Joseph University wrestling team traveled to Wabash College to compete at the Wabash College Invite. The Lions joined Huntingdon College and the University of Indianapolis at Wabash to compete in the tournament. The Lions had five wrestlers earn 5th or better in their weight class with one earning a 3rd Place finish.

Jordan Miller was the first Lion on the mat over the weekend competing in the 125lb weight class. Miller got his day started great with a 2nd period pin over Wabash's Jake Lentz to move onto the Semifinal match. But, Miller would fall in the Semifinal match moving him to the Consolation Semifinals. Here he would face off against Huntingdon's Jamal Whittington. Miller battled in this bout grinding his way to a 3-0 decision victory to move onto the 3rd Place Match. In his 4th match of the day, Miller wasn't able to get the victory but still placed 4th in the 125lb weight class.

Next for the Lions was Andrew Magness in the 141lb weight class. Magness got knocked off early in the Quarterfinals moving him into the Consolation Semifinals. Here he would face off against Wabash's Blake McGee. Magness would control the match ultimately getting a pin in the 2nd period to move onto the 3rd Place Match. Magness would get a rematch of the quarterfinals but couldn't pull out the victory still taking 4th in the 141lb weight class.

In the 165lb weight class the Lions had a pair of wrestlers. Both Dylan Deck and Skyler Cowgill took the mat for the Lions and looked dominant to start. Deck got an impressive 19-4 technical fall victory over Wabash's Rylan Hendricks. Cowgill left no breathing room for Wabash's Lucas Murphy taking him down by major decision 10-0.

But, in the Semifinal matches both wrestlers would fall moving them to the Consolation semifinals. Both wrestlers would get back on track with impressive victories. Deck got his 2nd technical fall victory of the day defeating Wabash's Murphy 18-3. Cowgill earned a 1st period pin over Huntingdon's Ty Wunderl moving both of The Mount wrestlers to the 3rd Place Match. Cowgill and Deck would go face-to-face for 3rd Place in the 165lb weight class. The teammates made for a great match with Deck getting the best of Cowgill by decision 7-4. Deck would earn 3rd Place while Cowgill still collected 4th Place.

Jermaine Poynter also had a solid day on the mat for the Lions. Poynter dropped his first two matches but was able to bounce back in the 5th Place Match. Poynter picked up a victory to close out his day taking 5th in the 174lb weight class. Freshman Jahlil Davis was also able to place for the Lions.
