Wrestling Goes 1-2 at Heidelberg Holiday Duals

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Mount St. Joseph wrestling team was in Tiffin, Ohio over the weekend, competing in the 2025 Heidelberg Holiday 'Dual event. The team wrestled three dual matches during the day, and put together a 1-2 record in their first duals of the season. 

MSJ 23 - Alma 23 (MSJ Wins on Criteria)

Alma jumped out to a 15-0 lead, as the Lions took the forfeit at 125, and losses at 133 and 141. Xavier Woods got the team on the scoreboard with a win by first period fall, earning six points. Dylan Fritz won by tech fall at 157 and Troy Myers got a major decision at 165 to tie the team score at 15. 

The teams then exchanged decisions at 174lbs and 184lbs, with McCaden Skeens keeping the Lions in the match with the 9-3 decision at 184. Alma then got a tech fall at 197 to take a five point lead into the final match. With the Lions staring down a loss Donovan Gayle returned the favor with a 17-1 tech fall to tie the overall team score at 23. The Mount would be awarded the victory on criteria. 

MSJ 18 - Heidelberg 30

In their second match of the day the Lions took on the host, the Heidelberg Student Princes. Cahiel Linton got the scoring started for the Mount at 141lbs, winning by 17-2 to earn the tech fall. Trailing 13-5 entering the 157lb match, the Lions got back to back wins to climb back into the match. Dylan Fritz won a 7-2 decision at 157lbs, and Troy Myers earned the major decision with a 15-3 win at 165. The two wins drew the Lions within one at 13-12. 

Heidelberg earned three straight wins, with two coming by way of fall from in the next three weight classes. Sergio Pacheco Ortiz won the heavyweight match by first period fall to earn six more points toward the team score. 

MSJ 12 - Adrian 36

In the final dual match of the day the Lions were only able to earn a pair of victories. Xavier Woods at 149lbs was able to secure the fall to earn six points. Brayden Kuhling also won by fall at 174lbs to finish the teams scoring.

The Lions will head to Nashville, Tennessee on December 20th for the Gator Boot Duals.
