Lions drop final series but close season with winning record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

LOCATION: Terre Haute, IN (Art Nehf Field)

THE BASICS:
The Mount (21-19, 10-17 HCAC) dropped 2 of 3 games at Rose-Hulman (26-11, 18-6 HCAC), dropping their final series of the season. Getting one win assured the Lions of a winning season, its first since 2011 when that team also finished 21-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 - Rose-Hulman 5 - MSJ 1

Freshman starter Alex Wagner took his first loss of the season in game 2, but still had a very solid day on the hill. Wagner went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks.

Offensively though the Lions just could not get the big hit to get them back into the game. They collected the same amount of hits as the Engineers, but left 8 runners on base.

Game 2 - MSJ 7 -Rose-Hulman 4
The Lions got their lone win of the series in game 2 on Friday night. It was played late friday night due to weather concerns for saturday, The Mount sent Paul Spaulding to the mound and he got off to a rocky start, surrendering a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning. All told though Spaulding would go 5.1 innings, allowing only the 3 first-inning runs.

Jacob Gunnell got the win in relief for the Lions, and he pitched outstanding to get it. He went 3.2 innings allowing only 1 earned run while striking out 7 Engineers.

The Mount tied the game at 3 in the top of the 5th inning on the strength of 3 extra-base hits.

They went on to score 4 in the 7th inning to put the game away, collecting 2 more extra basehits.

Game 3 - Rose-Hulman 10 - MSJ 2
The final game of the season saw the Lions send Wyatt Myers to the mound, and he got off to a solid start, holding the Engineers scoreless over the front 3 innings. The 4th and 5th innings were not as kind to Myers, as he allowed 9 hits and 7 runs (3 earned) over those innings. All told Myers line was 5 innings, giving up 10 hits and 7 runs (3 earned).

The defecit was too much for the Lions to overcome offensively. They collected a respectible 10 hits, but again were unable to collect the big hit and left 7 runners on base.

 STANDOUTS

Zak Farmer collected 5 hits in the series with 3 RBI, Matt Hofmann collected 6 hits, drove in 2 runs and scored 3 times.
