Defense falters in series opener at Anderson

Box Score

Friday was not the best showing by the Mount St. Joseph defense.  The Lions came out of the gates hot, scoring four runs in the first inning thanks to a couple of walks, a big double by Drew Werner (Sunman, IN / East Central), and a few miscues by Anderson's defense.

The Lions would send ace Alex Wagner (West Chester, OH / Lakota West) to the hill to face off against the Ravens.  Wagner would turn in yet another solid start for the Lions, working 5.2 innings on the mound, striking out 6, and giving up 7 runs, although none of those runs were earned.  He would be hit with the loss.

The story of the game would be poor defense by Mount St. Joseph.  The Lions would commit five errors in the field, leading to the first 11 runs of the game for the Ravens being unearned.  Three of the errors committed by the Lion defense came with two outs in the inning and allowed Anderson to continue on and score runs.

The Lions were able to put five runs up in the final two innings after some substitutions.  They got good contributions by their young players, who were able to pull closer and make it an semi-interesting game.

Marlon Foster entered the game for the Lions off the bench and scored a run.  Garrett Hogan also came off the bench and scored a run after working a walk.  Brandon Turner went 2-2 with an RBI and a run after he entered the game as well.

Senior first baseman Kyle Kittle (Lawrenceburg, IN / Lawrenceburg) also made an appearance in the game late for the Lions.  He turned in two outstanding at-bats for Mount St. Joseph and was able to work two walks, scoring one time.  Jose Bustamante (Austell, GA / South Cobb) also had two at-bats late in the game.  He went 1-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.  Jake Daulton (Monroe, OH / Monroe) was the last Lion to come off the bench in the game and was able to work his way on base via the walk and scored a run.

Ultimately, the Lions would not be able to recover from their defensive miscues and would fall to the Ravens 14-9 in the series opener.
